Curly hair can be both a blessing and a curse for the owner depending on the weather or when it simply ‘has a mind of its own!’. Curly hair is different from other hair types, it is much more sensitive to styling and the environment, and the fact that it is naturally drier in texture means that it needs more tender loving care to make sure that it stays healthy and gorgeous. We’re going to share a few things that are important to know about curly tresses to ensure that it stays smooth and bouncy 24/7.
Drop that brush like it’s hot!
If you are dealing with a client with curly hair or if you have curly hair yourself, never use a brush! Curly locks are more likely to experiencer breakages because of its bendy hair shafts. So when you brush through every twist and turn it causes frizz to appear . Especially avoid brushing your hair when it’s wet because that is when hair is most fragile, brushing will pull on your hair losing its natural elasticity and once again – frizz!
We recommend either using a wide tooth comb or even your fingers to detangle your lovely curls in the shower from the bottom up whilst you have conditioner in your hair, this way you can easily isolate any tangles you might find and loosen them easily. Once you get out the shower, remember to press your hair dry with your towel and avoid twisting and rubbing your hair in between your towel – be gentle!
Diffuse the situation
Air drying your hair is ideal, but if you don’t have time to sit around then a diffuser is your best friend. Most hair dryers will come with a diffuser attachment but if you don’t have one then you can easily find a compatible, inexpensive diffuser attachment in many shops and online. Drying curly hair with a standard blow dry can lead to tangled and frizzy curls from the winds thrashing the hair around. Whereas diffusers help to evenly disperse the air and focus it around your lovely curls in its unique shape thus keeping your curls intact and dry.
Before blow drying, evenly distribute a good heat protectant on your curls and then section off your curls for when you are blow drying as it ensures less frizz and beautifully defined curls. The finish off with a small amount of hair oil or serum.
Don’t sleep on damage
If you’ve ever gone to sleep with the loveliest curls only to wake up to an indistinguishable mess in the morning, we recommend either putting your hair up in a ‘pineapple’ and/or start using a silk or satin pillowcase. Your hair sticking to the cotton pillowcases teamed up with the tossing and turning you do whilst you’re asleep tangles your hair which makes your hair prone to breakage and frizz. However, the slippery texture of silk pillows will ensure that your curls stay intact without any disturbances to the hair.
Sleeping with a silk pillow combined with the pineapple hair trick will ensure you keep your curls looking voluminous and frizz-free. If you’re scratching your head thinking “What on earth is pineapple hair?”, let me explain! It is a technique that involves loosely gathering up your hair at the highest point of your head before you go to bed, and the end result will usually resemble a pineapple. This trick is used to preserve your curls and it leaves you with naturally formed volume by the morning.
Warning: never use elastic hair bands or hair bands with metal fasteners on your hair, regardless of if you have curly hair, straight hair, afro hair etc. just don’t do it! The elastic causes tension on your hair strands which can cause them to break off. Hair can also get caught in those pesky metal fasteners thus pulling and breaking off the hair. We recommend using an elastic-free, metal fastener-free, gentle hair tie like the popband ones.
